Background of the Study
Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) have emerged as a significant strategy for enhancing healthcare infrastructure, particularly in developing countries where government resources alone are insufficient (World Bank, 2024). In Nigeria, PPPs have been employed to address critical deficiencies in healthcare infrastructure, funding gaps, and inefficiencies in service delivery (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024). Yobe State, which has been affected by insurgency and economic challenges, faces significant deficits in hospital infrastructure, limiting access to quality healthcare services (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).
The state government has initiated several PPP projects aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure, including the construction of modern hospitals, provision of advanced medical equipment, and workforce development in collaboration with private sector actors and international organizations (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these partnerships remains a subject of debate, as concerns over sustainability, accountability, and equitable distribution of healthcare facilities persist (Ogunleye & Musa, 2023).
This study seeks to examine the impact of PPPs on hospital infrastructure development in Yobe State, evaluating their contributions, challenges, and effectiveness in improving healthcare service delivery.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of PPPs in hospital infrastructure development, Yobe State continues to experience significant healthcare challenges, including inadequate hospital facilities, shortage of medical equipment, and limited access to quality care (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). While PPPs are expected to bridge these gaps, their actual impact on hospital infrastructure remains unclear due to issues such as limited government oversight, private sector profit motives, and weak regulatory frameworks (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
Moreover, disparities exist in the distribution of healthcare facilities, with rural areas often receiving less attention despite the high disease burden. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of PPPs in hospital infrastructure development and provide insights into how these collaborations can be optimized for better healthcare delivery.
